Bible Bowl is a ministry available to all of our children in 3rd through 12th grade. Each year we focus on a certain book or group of books to study in depth.
The students participating in Bible Bowl have the opportunity to participate in study sessions, fellowship activities, and competitive events. We meet on Wednesday evenings at 6:00 and study one chapter. We use review questions at the end of each study session to reinforce the parts of the chapter we want to emphasize. The children complete these questions in groups or pairs and we go over the answers before we leave. In addition to the review questions, the students complete fill in the blank pages taken directly from the scripture (NKJV) and multiple choice questions at home, and practice with an online study tool. Our online study tool has unlimited users and thus is available to our entire congregation. When we complete our study of a book, we have a celebration fellowship activity with dinner provided. We also challenge the adults in the congregation to compete against the students. During these challenges, everyone completes a 15 question quiz individually, and then the adults and children work together in teams to answer questions orally.
We have several students who participate in the Tennessee Valley Bible Bowl competitions. There, the students answer 50 multiple choice questions by holding up cards marked with A, B, C, or D. A scorekeeper is the only one to see the responses, so no one is singled out during this portion of the competitions. The scores are calculated for each team and for individuals and awards are presented in each age division. At the end of each competition, the top scoring individuals from the first half are able to compete in a buzzer round where they sit in front of the audience and can buzz in to answer questions. We typically take 6-7 teams to each competition and have had students bring home ribbons in each division.
Another option for our Bible Bowl students is to compete at the Lads to Leaders convention in Nashville. This competition has two parts. The first is a 100 question multiple choice test that will be taken before we go to Nashville. The top scorers on this test will be given trophies at the convention in April. The second part is done at the convention and is conducted like the Tennessee Valley Bible Bowl (TVBB) Competitions with the winning teams receiving trophies.
Some of our students only come to the study sessions, some compete at the Tennessee Valley Bible Bowl (TVBB), and some will go to Lads to Leaders in the spring. No matter how the children choose to participate, they are learning God’s Word and should be commended for their efforts.
